Energy balance means proper control of the calories that you eat and the calories that you burn during the day.
Studies show that aerobic physical activities like walking help keep people from gaining weight. When people balance the calories they eat with the calories they use, AND do a walking program, they are able to lose weight. When people lose weight with a diet and walking program, they are more likely to keep it off when they keep walking after they stop the diet.
